Women Pioneers in Medicine: Halle Tanner Dillion Johnson, MD 1864-1901, 1st African American female physician in the state of Alabama; Susan Smith McKinney-Steward, MD 1847-1918, 3rd female physician in the U.S. and 1st in the state of New York; Rebecca Lee, MD 1835-?, 1st African American female physician in the U.S. A number of items on display were saved from destruction by Dr. Gaffney.
